Palliative Care vs. Hospice Care

Palliative care:

  • Palliative care is the umbrella term for symptom and case management for those with a terminal diagnosis regardless of their prognosis.

  • Care begins after diagnosis and during treatment.

  • Palliative care provides active disease-directed treatment and symptom management.

  • Hospice is specifically end-of-life care when the patient has less than 6 months to live.

  • It is the final stage of palliative care.

  • The only goal of hospice is comfort care to make the patient as comfortable as possible in the final stages of life.
